Changing Lives for the Better 

 

Have you ever experienced something happening in your life that forever changed your life for the better? Periodically, witnessing a vital event will lead to a drastically altered way of thinking or a drastically altered way of living your life.  In the selections, “A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley,” “Profile: Malala Yousfazi,”and “Jesus Colon,” Malala, Scrooge, and Jesus, undergo major changes as a result of sudden events in their lives.            

In the play ” A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley,” the character of Scrooge undergoes a change from a cruel miser to a joyful, generous individual. The spirits of Past, Present, and Future, show Scrooge events from his life that cause him to realize that making changes in his life will positively affect him in his life and others around him. “Spirit! Hear me! I am not the man I was. I will not be the man I would have not been but for this intercourse. Why show me this, if I am past hope?” As a result, Scrooge perceives that in order to have a worthwhile life, you have to make positive changes to your life. 

In the article ” Profile: Malala Yousafazi,” the character Malala gets shot in the head by the Taliban, and this event launches her into being an internationally known advocate for girls’ education. When Malala got shot in the head by the Taliban, she got shot in the head because she was a well-known advocate for girls’ education.” When she was shot in the head in October 2012 by a Taliban gunman, she was already well known in Pakistan. However, that one abhorrent act launched her to international fame.” Therefore, Malala is now known around the world as a famous activist for girls’ education, and she has now won a Nobel Peace prize. 

When Jesus Colon got off a subway train, he didn’t help a woman who was going to struggle getting herself and her kids up the stairs. This event changed Colon because after not helping the woman out of fear of racism, he laments his decision. “Colon feels sorrow that fear of prejudice causes him to act this way.” After his lamented decision, he pledged to himself that next time he will help the person, even if he is afraid of racism because he is black. 

In conclusion, witnessing vital events will periodically lead to an altered way of thinking or living your life.  Malala, Jesus, and Scrooge witnessed vital events that drastically altered their way of thought or way of living.  Because of these events, each character’s life was changed for the better.
